Other typing tests

The requirements for an official typing test are to complete a five-minute typing test on a statistical copy, and achieve a minimum speed of 40 words per minute (WPM) with an accuracy of no less than 90%.

Official typing tests need to be conducted under official test conditions (i.e. proctored) at a business school, college, education centre, or other official agency or department. Remember to enter your candidate reference or ID during the test attempt.

Frequently asked questions

Touch typing is typing with 10 fingers without the need to look down at the keyboard. It’s the only way to become a much faster typist.

By increasing your typing speed, you can become more productive and spend your time on other things at work. Instead of looking at the keys before one of them is pressed, you are focused on the text which you type. Your muscles are programmed to write correctly, so you do not need to think about mechanics of typing. Touch typing is a skill respected by prospective employers.

This site generates random content to type from a comprehensive database of over 10,000 commonly-used English nouns, verbs, phrases, and other parts of business English writing. Further parts of the test content such as dates, numbers, and proper names are generated entirely at random. All these parts are organized into similar categories so we can be sure that every typing test generated is of a similar complexity. Test security is greatly improved as every typing test generated will never have the same typing test content as another.

A straight typing copy includes typing alphabetical letters and very common punctuation marks, such as a period (full-stop), comma, and question mark. A statistical typing copy includes alphanumerical data and many other common symbols found on the keyboard.

A one-minute typing test may give you just an idea of your typing speed. However, to get the full picture you should complete a five-minute timing on a statistical copy. A five-minute speed test on a statistical copy is needed in official examinations.

The final speed is computed by subtracting the number of uncorrected errors from the gross WPM. An accuracy of less than 90% is considered a poor attempt and should be disqualified.

QWERTY refers to the arrangement of keys on a standard English keyboard. The name derives from the first six characters on the top alphabetic line of the keyboard. It’s the most common type of keyboard in use today.

No. Typing on a touch screen or a small device is a very different experience. The tests available on this site are designed for the standard QWERTY English keyboard which is the standard peripheral for computers found in offices today. However, you can conduct tests on a tablet device if you are using a QWERTY keyboard attached.
